How We Approach It

ACUPOINTS practises acupuncture through a modern clinical lens. While our foundation is in traditional Chinese medicine — including tongue and pulse diagnosis — we present the work, and the reasoning behind it, in accessible, practical terms.

Every new client begins with a comprehensive initial consultation. We listen to the history, examine the current presentation, and build a clear picture of contributing factors before treatment begins. Treatment then follows a structured arc, typically four to eight sessions, with each session informed by the previous one.

Progress is tracked. If something is not working, we know by session three — not session ten. Treatment plans are adjusted when the evidence calls for it.

What to Expect

Your First Visit

Your initial consultation (75 minutes) includes a thorough health intake, physical assessment, and your first treatment. You will leave with a written summary of your practitioner's findings and a proposed treatment plan.

What to wear: Comfortable, loose clothing. Depending on the focus areas, you may need to expose specific limbs or your back. Your practitioner will advise.

Follow-up Sessions

Standard sessions (45–60 minutes) begin with a brief check-in, followed by treatment. Needles are typically retained for 20–30 minutes. Many clients experience a state of deep relaxation or light sleep during this phase. This is normal and expected.

ACC-registered provider. Subsidised sessions are available for clients with accepted ACC claims. Please bring your ACC claim number to your first appointment. We handle the paperwork.

Common Questions

The needles used in acupuncture are extremely fine — much thinner than a standard hypodermic needle. Most clients describe a brief dull ache or mild pressure as a needle is inserted, which quickly subsides. Discomfort during the treatment itself is uncommon. Many clients fall asleep on the table.
This depends on the nature and duration of your presenting complaint. Acute conditions may respond in three to four sessions. Chronic conditions typically require six to eight sessions for meaningful, lasting change. Your practitioner will give you a realistic estimate at your initial consultation — and will update that estimate as treatment progresses.
Yes. ACUPOINTS is an ACC-registered provider. Clients with an accepted ACC claim are eligible for subsidised acupuncture sessions. Please bring your claim number to your first visit — your practitioner will handle the paperwork from there.
The honest answer: sometimes yes, sometimes no. Acupuncture has a strong evidence base for musculoskeletal pain, headache, stress, and some hormonal and digestive conditions. For conditions outside this scope, we will tell you clearly. We would rather refer you to the right practitioner than proceed with treatment that is unlikely to help.
